I don't want to be the "loud generator guy" but...

... I don't have much budget left for a generator. So I'm going to have to buy a cheap one. My apologies in advance.

I see a lot of people complaining about generator noise and frankly I don't want to listen to it either. I plan to fire it up only when absolutely needed, but does anyone have experience quieting a louder generator? I've looked around and considered building a cage of sorts. Any advice would be appreciated.

Long extension cord. Put it in the grass. Lean whatever you are using for sound deadening against it at a 45 degree angle.

Get a really long extension cord and haul it off away from everyone.
I've seen some setups with some mufflers welded to the generator.

For sure.. I would recommend a heavy duty extention chord for cleaner power. longer the chord the more amperage you loose which might mean the difference between properly heated tires and ones that never get to temp.

I'm currently using a convention too, and agree with everyone else here.

I'm running a 50ft amp cord that's hard wired to my trailer, run that out in front of the truck and built a 3 sided enclosure. In all honesty I couldn't even hear it over other peoples set up that were a couple hundred feet away, sitting out in the open.

Also plan ahead to pit in area that you can direct the sound away from everyone else.

HF sells an inverter generator that is pretty quiet. 2400w

If you can find the coupon it is 400$ + tax

Pro tip: get a new spark plug for it right out of the box because the crappy chinese one sucks.

Yeah, all very good input here.

Mine wasn't as loud as others but, definitely wasn't the quietest either.
I usually wasn't the get there early type. But, regardless, as soon as i get there I'd let those immediately around me know i was going to try my best to not irritate them with it running. So, I'd kind of let them knw where i planned on putting it along with something to "block" some of the noise and feel free to let me know if there was a better suggestion on where to put it beforehand. So far, everyone was kewl about it and seemed appreciative about it.
One guy, at TWS, got extra tables from the eating area to help me "deaf'n" the sound at night.
I ought to see if i can find my stock muffler from the bike to see if someone can rig it up for me to attach to the generator. I think i seen someone have something like that before.

Oh, as far as voltage drop, without getting into formulas, you should be fine with a 12 guage 100' extension cord not affecting anything.
