    Storing tires in Texas

I now live in downtown Austin, so my track bike sits outside under a cover. Do I need to be worried about the heat and sun in Texas ruining the tires? I use track oriented DOT tires, not slicks.

If I were to find a storage unit somewhere, would the ambient temperature in summer be a problem? It gets so hot down here. Not looking forward to July track days.

I'd be more worried about it getting stolen

All rubber starts to degrade as soon as it's made. I deal with o-rings, packers and all sorts of other high dollar rubber goods daily at work. 3 things that shorten the life of rubber goods are:
    1) Heat- should be kept in an air conditioned room
    2) Light - sunlight or artificial
    3) ozone ( your computers laser printer actually produces quite a bit of ozone- so don't store in your office)

We keep all of our spares and rains inside black hefty bags and stored in the closet inside the house. (yes, it's a big closet)

This applies to all rubber goods, not just tires. Also- It's not good to keep em in your wallet...... sorry, couldn't resist

My grand dad always kept them tucked away in the cab light of his truck. He said he did that cause it kept them warm and ready to use. I'm guessing that's why he had 3 sons.

I was hoping someone was going to tell me that it does not get hot enough to make a difference. I guess I am going to have to take the wheels off in order to store inside.

I store mine in 3 easy steps:
    1. Race 6hrs of endurance
    2. Park in driveway
    3. Cruise around town

They're good for another set of sprints 4 weeks later

    Not a joke.

Just out of curiosity, what do you consider a track oriented DOT tire?
