Racing without a rear number plate

I saw a team continuing to turn laps this weekend despite no apparent side or rear number plate. Is there some exception given to my understanding of the rules for this? I'm sure a front number plate would be required, but I think it's reasonable to permit the exception for the rear, if only as a gamble with your transponder and manual scoring.

I don't mean to call anyone out; I just want to know for future reference.

Josh, sometimes a certain amount of leeway is provided to an endurance team (and occasionally a sprint rider) after a crash that completely destroys the tail section bodywork to continue without a tail section (number plate). A front number plate will always be required.
