anyone have any advice for gearing a R3 with a 520 chain?
Seriously? Nobody?
I've only run with the stock gearing so far, but I've been asking around about the same thing (I want to run the 520 to prevent having to change out chains so often like with the 415).
This is what Jesse Norton (YamahaR3Racing) told me:
"Stock gearing 14/43 works for some longer, faster tracks, but +1 on the rear (14/44) is the most common out here on the west cost. If you have more technical tracks with less top speed, you can do +2 on the rear which requires a longer 114 link chain (stock is 112), or you can go -1/-1 (13/42), which is nearly the same ratio as 14/45, but works with the stock 112 chain. With really long, fast tracks, like PIR, guys run -1 on the rear, so 14/42. A kit containing a 13 and 14 front, and 42, 43, and 44 rear pretty much covers everything with a 112 (stock length) chain."
What I’m running with a 415:
NOLA 17/53 3.12
MSRH 17/54 3.18
17/55 3.235
MSR/HALLETT 17/56 3.294
