KELSEY BEGINS TITLE DEFENSE

RPSRaceTeam.com rider Danny Kelsey began his title defense while enduring a tough set of challenges during the CMRA Sprint Championship Series hosted by Mercedes of Sugarland Raceway located just south of Houston in Angleton, Texas. Kelsey scored a pair of wins and 2 more podium finishes. The event looked like another record weekend for the CMRA and competition looked to be fierce with several riders that looked ready to take advantage of the conditions.

Track conditions were very tricky and many riders found themselves off the pace until actual weekend races. At the same time, the team endured one of its most challenging weekends in recent memory as Kelsey suffered a massive high side when a water hose failed as his first laps of the year were being completed.

The crash knocked Kelsey’s shoulder out of socket, heavily damaged the team’s GSXR-750, and caused a lot of general soreness. Crew Chief Marcus McBain worked through the evening and got the bike back together, but was hesitant to put Kelsey back on the bike. “I really had to wonder if that was the right thing to do. We run things as long as we can to enable us to race 11-13 weekends a year on a very tight budget,” remarked McBain. The team was able to overnight all new hoses in to give Kelsey confidence to throw a leg back of the red Suzuki that enters its fifth year into team service.

Kelsey was able to put together only 3 short practice sessions together Friday afternoon and this left the team scrambling to get a good setup on a track that Kelsey did very well at last year. With the setup numbers not working, the team was really concerned. They could not get the bike to track well in the last two turns. Unfortunately a wall sits directly outside of the last turn and Kelsey just couldn’t get the confidence he needed to run at the pace he did last year.

The competition wasn’t concerned for the team and Kelsey lined up for his first race on Sunday. As 750 Superstock got underway, Kelsey got a terrible start. He found himself back in 14th place as the pack exited the first turn. Although he put a spirited charge on M4 exhausts and Dynojet tuned GSXR-750, he was only able to move up to 5th place. It was a very frustrating start to the season.

Kelsey was able to get back on winning track in Open Superstock as he launched his Pirelli shod and DP Brakes fitted GSXR-1000 quickly into the lead and took a convincing win by 13 seconds. Using this as a warm up for the premiere race of the day, Kelsey felt he may be able to secure a win in the Breast Cancer Research Awareness Formula One race and keep some momentum going. With special ceremonies taking place for a local injured fireman and over 35 entries, the class resembled a National event more than a club race.

As the starting lights launched the field for Formula One, Kelsey found himself in 2nd place. He was able to move to the point by lap 2 and felt he may be able to seize his 2nd win. He was quickly under siege though as he just was not able to keep the pace he needed to stay in front. Although he pushed on the new leader, he eventually found himself unable to push any harder. At the checkered flag, Kelsey found himself 2.5 seconds behind the race winner.

Kelsey noted, “That was a tough race. I was doing my best…and yeah I was definitely banged up from the crash, but really I just didn’t get to the pace I wanted to. I have to tip my hat to Eddie Thornton. He rode really well and deserved to be on top of the podium. I am definitely going to heal up and work to get back on top of the box next race. Congrats again to the competitors and the CMRA for putting on a premiere race that drew 37 entries. That is impressive.”

Kelsey got back on the winning track in Open Superbike and took his 2nd win of the day on his Silkolene lubricated GSXR-1000. Several changes were made to ensure Kelsey would be able to run a winning pace with a key geometry recommendation by Jimmy Cambora of Raceworx. Kelsey finished the weekend off in 750 Superbike with a 2nd place finish.

“I feel like I did not have the bikes or the team ready to the level we like to compete at for this first race. With only a few months between the end of the season and the start of this year, we needed another month to get things in order. I feel like we will be much more prepared for Texas World Speedway next month, and we will be working very hard to get back to the level of competition we like to compete at,” reflected crew chief Marcus McBain.

“I was pleased to come away with two victories. I was definitely sore riding all weekend, but I also realize we did not get the bikes to the level of competition that we normally achieve. I look forward to Texas World Speedway and getting back up to the level we like to compete at,” Kelsey stated.

Danny Kelsey will continue to contest the entire CMRA series in his efforts to defend the number one plate. The team would not be able to compete at this level without the special efforts of KMC Controls, RS Taichi, Pirelli, Dynojet, Vortex, Motoliberty, South Central Race Center, Motopia, M4 Exhausts, DP Brakes, K’s Motorsports, GP Suspension, JRi Shocks, Lone Star Track Days, Shoei Helmets, Hotbodies Racing, Silkolene, WRW Racing, Barnett, Maverick Moto Media, and Chicken Hawk Racing. Kelsey will resume racing action at Texas World Speedway in March during the second round of CMRA Sprint Championship Action.

Although the results may not reflect it, the CMRA season opener, at Motorsports Ranch Houston in Angleton, Texas, was a solid and productive weekend for Kinzer Naylor Racing.

First order of business was the C Superbike 4-hour endurance race. Kinzer got an excellent start, on his Kawasaki ZX6R, from 19th on the grid, and made his way up to 9th within two corners. Kinzer continued to run inside the top-ten for the first hour of the race. At the end of the first hour, he came in for fuel and a rider change. After an efficient pit stop, Kinzer's team mate and father, Brian Naylor, headed back out for the second hour. Brian continued to run inside the top ten until about halfway through his stint, when 4th gear on their bike decided to take the rest of the day off. Instead of calling it a day, the team decided to take the 'frame-change' penalty and use the rest of the race to allow Kinzer to get their second bike dialed in for Sunday's sprint races. After a quick transponder swap and fueling, was back on track putting in race simulation runs at the same pace as the endurance race front-runners.

Sunday's 5-lap sprint races all had a very similar feel to them. In all four races, Kinzer started from the back row of the grid (lesson-learned, kids, get those pre-entries in ASAP!). First up was the Expert B-Superstock race. From 29th on the grid, Kinzer got a blazing start and outbroke a third of the field, heading into turn 1. As the race progressed, Kinzer made his way toward the front, but with the race being only 5 laps long, he ran out of time, and scored a 13th place finish.

Next up, in the Expert C-Superstock race, it was much of the same, as Kinzer got another great start, from 25th on the grid, made up ten places into the first turn, and brought home a hard-fought 14th place.

For the Expert C-Superbike, it was a 28th place grid spot, and once again, it was Kinzer that the bottom third of the field watched go past them, on the brakes, into turn 1. As in his previous races, Kinzer ran a pace very similar to the front-runners, but could only do so much in 5 laps, and finished in a decent 11th place.

For his final race, Expert B-Superbike, Kinzer continued his turn 1 braking antics, this time from 21st on the grid. The impromptu push-up sessions and ketchup-based diet seem to be paying off. This time, Kinzer had some clear track in front of him and was able to quickly reel in the top-ten group before finishing in a weekend-best 9th place.

With round 1 and some championship points in the bag, look for Kinzer much further up the points-based starting grid, for CMRA Round 2 at Texas World Speedway, in College Station, Texas.

Kinzer Naylor Racing would like to thank its sponsors; Speed Moto Company, Pit Pass Moto, Invinci Graphics, Spiegler, South Central Race Center, Graceland College, and Downhill District. Super high-five thanks to the CMRA staff for a very fun and well-organized weekend...see you at TWS!

Team Dallas Honda finished the season 4th in Modern Classic in our first full season of endurance racing.

In our first attempt to compete a full endurance season we got quite an education.
My hat is off in tribute to the teams that endurance race year after year.
They make it look so easy !

We found not only does it take lot of team work to make it happen but when you factor in injuries, mechanical problems, scheduling conflicts, & personal issues they all take their toll making it difficult to compete in every BBE race.
We were able to race 5 out of the 6 races.
Race 5 had to be scrubbed due to scheduling conflicts & personal issues.

Starting with the MSRH race we rode our B bike, Old Faithful, because the A bike was down for an engine rebuild. Problems surfaced with the front brakes that lost us a few laps but we succesfully completed the race 4th MCE

For the 8 hour TWS race we practiced Friday with LSTD only to find the A bike's rebuilt engine had overheating problems. This forced us back on "Old Faithful" for the 8 hour which she carried us without a hitch.

After the long wait from March to April for the next endurance race we ventured to NOLA, short one team member out on medical. "Old Faithful" carried the 3 of us through the 6 hour without any mechanical problems even tho she was getting a bit tired.
The A bike was still down for repairs because I needed to work more overtime to get the funds to complete it.

Another couple of months passed until the 6 hour Cresson BBE race.
We asked Brian to join the team because Daisy was going to miss this race.
The A bike was ready for this one !
We had carefully broken in the motor & tested the bike.
The old 2003 Team O'Donnell / NW Honda bike, now renamed "Angelica", was ready to race!
Steve Upchurch built the motor and it is strong !
Roger built the suspension and it is sure footed and stable!
Larry suggested we name her Angelica because she is so sweet :)
Our riders were able to set some personal bests on Angelica at Cresson
With stiff competition in MCE we were able to finish 5th

As we all know, the September ECR race was canceled due to unsafe track conditions and moved to TWS the next weekend.
We tried our best to make the rescheduled TWS date but just could not make it happen due to scheduling and personal issues.

We decided to make the last race of the season at TWS a fun one for us because it was evident, after studying the points numbers, that any chance of improving our overall position in classification would not change.
Missing that one race put us too far out of points position for a shot at a 3rd place finish overall in MCE for 2013.
We had a good race with no crashes and no mechanicals.

This year's effort would not have been possible with out the help and support of our sponsors.
We would like to thank them for believing in us!
Dallas Honda, Silkolene, EBC Brakes, Lockhart Phillips, & GPR Stabilizers, Nick's Custom Detailing, and www.motomasssage.com.

We also had help from many other people associated with and promoting racing with the CMRA.
Your work, services, help, and advice are greatly appreciated.
Thank you !
David @ Island Racing/ Michelin Tires, Roger @ On Road Off Road Cycles, Marcus and Danny @ RPS Race Team, Jim @ Raceworx, Steve @ Racing Engine Services, Audry @ MotoLiberty, Ride Smart, LSTD, 3T, Ty Howard's One on One Lessons, motoDFW.com, WFOriders.com, highperformancecrew.com, 212decals.com, P1 Racing, ECR, Motipia,
Last but not least the "Broke Backmarkers" for selling us their old endurance bike, "Old Faithful" also know as "Good Old Bessie", whose engine was built by North Texas Superbikes & Ryan Warren - she carried us thru the first 3 races of the season while the A bike was down for repairs

In closing we would like to thank all of the CMRA Staff for their selfless dedication to our club.
Without you all none of us could race !!

2013 Team Dallas Honda : Nick Chapman, Daisy DeSimone, Bill Klindworth, Brian Millsap, and Larry Wise

Also, We would like to wish our very own Daisy, Rainbox Sox, DeSimone the best of luck racing with G-Baby next endurance season !
You Go Girl !!!

Texas World Speedway is always a fun place to race. This weekend we enjoyed fantastic weather and great racing. We also had a chance to review our spare parts and test the maximum battery life of our power tools.

Friday practice felt good as Olay and Sean worked all day to dial in our suspension. We were confident our setup was good to go for all members of our team.

On the first lap of the Saturday practice a bike ahead of us blew an engine. Olay hit the oil slick and went down. Upon arriving back to the pits the team came together to repair the damage to our bike. We did so much drilling that we used up one of our battery packs. We finished up with enough time to for one shakedown lap before we grid up for the race.

Olay got us off to a good start and it appeared our repair job was holding together because he managed to put up a team best 1:51 lap time. We were in 5th place when he handed the bike off to Brad. Brad and Mike put together the next two hours of flawless consistent laps.

A few laps after I got on the bike my stint was cut short by a red flag. As I sat in the pits waiting for the restart it occurred to me that I had not started a single race this year. I was unfamiliar with the light system and I had never started an I4 600 under race conditions. Thanks to the fine work of my team, I was able to grid up in row 2.

As the lights went out and the race started, I realized that our R6 has considerably less torque at low RPMs than my Triumph. I watched the entire field pass me on the start as I waited for the engine to spin up into the correct operating range. Lesson learned, practice starting even if you aren't the starter for your team.

Sean took the bike from me with about an hour and ten minutes left in the race. We knew we didn't have enough gas to finish. After an hour of solid endurance ridging, Sean dropped the bike off to Olay for a splash and go. Olay brought us home in a comfortable 3rd in class and 4th place overall.

We are excited about the final race of the season in three weeks.
A previous test with Dominguez proved that the record was obtainable and final setup of the bike was completed Sunday morning with Jim Cambora of Raceworxx. The preparation and experience led the team to a record breaking lap of 1:13.812 during the Formula 1 race. The previous track record of 1:13.899 was set August 26, 2007 by Ty Howard. Thank you to our Lord and Savior, with out Him; none of our accomplishments would be possible!!! Thank you to Track Junkie Racing, almost any part you need, they can get, Just send Larry a message. GnS Racing Transport, my dad has done a lot for my team, Thank you Dad, I love you. Thanks to Ridesmart Motorcycle School, Great Track day provider!!! P1 Racing- Brandon did an awesome dialing the bike in!! John Hutchinson at South Central Race Center, Tires were like glue. And thank you to Scott G. from 3KS for being there for anything we needed during our endurance race. Thank you to Mr. P, for helping figure out the gremlins in our bike, thing had me worried.

Halffast had the honor of delivering the sponsorship money from HPC to the top racers; it was awesome to be able to be in the mix with the admin work!!
And Congratulations to our Brother Brawp group for making Road Racing Magazine!!!

On this trip we were a lonely group of three, Mark, Joey and Ryan. Missing our 4th team member Ivan Fuentes, who had last minute issues prohibit him from racing with us in Cresson. But he will be there at TWS!!!!!. Mark and I arrived Thursday night to get a good spot and set up all our gear. Friday Mark had practice on the 1.7 track, and struggled all day until the last session where things finally came together for him. Then Mark and I hit the 1.3 track for an hour to practice the mini track. All went well and he felt good, except for all the seams on the track.
Ryan showed up on Friday night with his brother Chris, our extra pit man!!. Saturday morning came and Ryan and Mark had two 30-minute practice sessions in the morning. Mark and I raced in ESS on our 250’s and Mark got another great 4th and I managed a 10th place. Then we ran the next race, Mark raced his 1969 Cb160 in the f5 and I ran my NSF100 in the f7 class. Mark got 2nd and I got a first place. Then the F4 race came for be again back-to-back. Thanks to Chris (Ryan’s brother) and Ryan for switching the transponder over and taking the warmers off. I was running in 11th place, but had a run off when the front end would not hold the line. So I ended up in 13th place.
As soon as my F4 race was done I had Ryan run the bike to Brandon at P1 Racing to adjust the suspension, he made some adjustments and sent us on our way. THE BIKE HANDLED AWESOME.
So now the 4-Hour Endurance race is about to begin, and Our Team Captain starts the race for us, Mark Shim. Mark started the race with a level head and chose his spots carefully and got us up to 12th place by the end of his stint. Then came our much-anticipated Rykoson for the second leg. With only 1 hour of practice on this track, Ryan was able to figure the line out quickly and was able to run some decent 1:18’s. Then I ran my stent and managed to stay on the bike for 1 hour 10 minutes. Our pit stops on our last race were around 4 minutes and down to a little over 2 minutes for this race thanks to our team organization and new quick fill unit. Ryan went on a second stent after mine was over and he is the one who went into beast mode and ran 1 hour 20 minutes when we called him in. He was able to bring his times down to 1:16’s. And now it was time for Mark to bring it home, he ran the last 40 minutes of the race, and was able to chase down the team ahead of us and give us our 5TH PLACE FINISH. We finished the race 5th out of 25 teams. We all had a blast and can’t wait for the next race at TWS, Look out for Halffast Baby !!!!!!

Joey- ESS-10th, F4-13h, F7-1st,
Mark- ESS-4th, F5-2nd, SSB-19th, SSC-14th
Halffast Endurance team 5th out of 25

And a video from our boy Rykoson!!!

We totally saved time in the pits and being organized!! Need to get faster! It is so fun starting out with yall...and learning what it takes to finish strong! ...what other are types of things do you all remember going through when you were first getting started!!

So let me get this straight. A CMRA race in an awesome city at a world class facility? Count us in!

Wow, what a fantastic facility! Loved the track, loved the locals, loved the crowd.

In contrast to all of the positives, it seems that the racing gremlins decided it was our turn for a visit. We overcame many minor issues over the course of the race.

We started out the race with high hopes resting on Brad’s shoulders. He got us off to a great start before getting involved in a low speed racing incident. After sorting out a bent rotor and some off kilter controls, I got on the bike with the intention of clicking off some steady laps. The bike was pretty hard to turn, my hand was going numb, and my right knee kept feeling different every time I touched it down in a turn. I figured it was just my inexperience with the track. Later, I would find that my puck was not in good condition.

After an hour on the bike, I was ready to try out Olay’s new pit toy:

While I was cooling off, Olay took his first turn on the bike. Despite the fact that our clip-ons had been inadvertently adjusted to point in a solid right turn, Olay steadily had us climbing the leader board. Olay compared our clip on postion to a cruiser…so we made some adjustments and a tire change. We sent out Mike on fresh rubber ready to test out the “sport” mode of the clip ons.

As usual, Mike cranked off an hour of fast and steady lap times without incident, handing the bike off to Sean . Sean had some great battles with lap traffic before handing the bike off to Brad and Olay for our final “one-two” punch of the race. We are very happy with our final finish of 6th in class and 11th overall. Our team came together to recover from small problems the entire race.

What a great weekend with fantastic memories. Many of our family members made it down for the race. I’m starting to feel spoiled because we have so many “extended pit crew” members that I feel like a pro. I get help with my leathers, drinks, food as well as encouragement and assistance packing up at the end of the day. We thank our families for not only supporting us, but for enjoying this great club along side us.

Crazy Dog Racing returned to competition this weekend at NOLA Motorsports Park for the 5th round of the CMRA Big Bike Endurance season. The six hour race brought a number of challenges to the team in which they had to battle not just the other competitors on track. The heat and humidity of southern Louisiana was ever present the entire weekend, making one of the main concerns of the team whether the ice chest was full of bottled water and ice.

After analyzing the two previous races this season, CDR decided to change up the rider order in hopes of better matching the abilities of the team members to that of the competition. Tristan Reeves took the green flag for the first 45 minute stint. A bog on the launch left him mired in the midst of the field, but within just a few laps he found himself circulating the 2.75 mile coursewith little traffic. Running consistent times, Reeves finished off his stint and entered the pits so that Robert Henriksen could take-over duties on track. With no pit help this weekend, the team divided pit duties among the three riders in the pits so that rear stand, fueling, and fire extinguisher duties were always covered.

As Henriksen thumbed the starter button, however, the next casualty of the heat was discovered as the battery would barely turn the starter. Quick thinking of the team led to push-starting the bike for the remaining pit stops. Running similar times to Reeves, Henriksen finished off his full stint as well, receiving the "pit" board while Mark Shim readied to jump on the #32 bike. Once again the Hunsaker fuel dump can and dry-break nozzle allowed the team to complete pit stops far faster than their competition. Shim departed the pits and took to the track but after just a few laps signaled that he was returning to the pits. Final rider Wes Eastveld scrambled to get geared up as the team prepped for Shim's unexpected return. A splash of gas and a quick push and Eastveld departed for his stint. Shim, clearly in pain and distress, explained that a seemingly minor crash in morning practice on his Ninja 250 sprint bike resulted in lingering pain that surfaced only as he competed on track.

Now down one rider and with the Louisiana sun baking the track, Reeves and Henriksen discussed shortened stints for the remaining four hours of racing. When Eastveld signaled his returning to the pits just a few laps short of his full stint, the team knew the heat was taking its toll and solidified the shortened stint plan. Afternoon cloud cover, cold drinks, and getting some food allowed the team to reconsider this plan again as the day wore on with Reeves and Henriksen finishing out the race with 40 minute stints each, however by now the heat had taken its toll on the bike and each rider noticed a distinct power fall-off in the top of the rev range. The two riders pressed on and finished out the race with Henriksen taking the checkered flag.

By the end of the day, Crazy Dog Racing found themselves in 4th place in Modern Classic and 12th overall out of 33 entries. Numerous big-name teams found themselves watching from the pit wall as bikes and riders failed throughout the day, but Team CDR pressed on and finished the full six hours of competition. The team was more than happy with this result after dealing with numerous situations over the course of the day including no pit crew, losing one rider to injury, and the nearly unbearable heat and humidity of southern Louisiana.

Crazy Dog Racing would like to thank its numerous sponsors that have helped make this season possible as well as the friends and family that continue to support the racing endeavor.

5 Wins for Kelsey @ Eagles Canyon Raceway

Georgetown, Texas rider Danny S. Kelsey won all five races he entered during the third round of the CMRA Sprint Championship Series held Sunday April 14th, 2013. Conditions were tricky as racers were greeted with drainage issues that created over 20 areas on the track where water was coming up on the racing line. Kelsey however persevered through the weekend and posted his personal best lap time (1:47.923) on Sunday as conditions improved over the weekend.

The third round of the CMRA Sprint Championship Series was also another opportunity for fans and racers to watch the on-going rivalry between Kelsey and fellow Texan Ty Howard. Both racers have really elevated their performance in the first two weekends of the “gentleman’s duel”. Entering the weekend Howard lead the “head to head” by a margin of three races to one. With less than a tenth of a second separating the two riders at TWS in both races, Kelsey was putting in “extra effort” to change the outcome in his favor.

Friday Practice and Team 60 Event

Electing to sit out the early sessions on Friday, the team worked diligently to overcome the trying track surface and posted a 1:51.2. Valuable setup information was gained, and crew chief Marcus McBain made critical geometry and internal suspension changes Friday to prepare for the CMRA’s inaugural “Team 60” race run on Saturday which features two rider teams riding 20-35 minutes each and making pit stops to swap transponders under “dead engine” conditions. The race also featured a Le Mans style start that put a historic wrinkle into what turned out to be a popular format with the CMRA racers. The team used the event for more setup data and Kelsey was able to turn the fastest lap of the race with a 1:50.6 on lap 3. Kelsey put in some fast laps while battling fellow CMRA veteran Derek Wagnon. It was a familiar sight in the history of the two fast CMRA veterans with Wagnon jumping out to the lead and Kelsey taking the point as they completed lap two. As teams entered the pits for the mandatory rider change, Kelsey stayed out for another 3 laps and assumed the lead building a 48 second lead over 2nd place before handing off to teammate Brandt Dillon.

Kelsey was very disappointed with the overall performance of the team’s GSXR-1000 during the Team 60 event. Later inspection by the team found that the eyelet for the shock was actually making contact with the rear linkage during the top out on the stroke. Kelsey’s crew chief inspected all components Saturday night/Sunday morning and modified both the rear and front ride height to provide optimal geometry and performance. With the crew chief finishing up final changes at around 3:00am Sunday morning, the crew chief felt Kelsey would have what he would need to perform for maximum results during the CMRA sprints coming up in just a few hours.

Sunday Sprint Racing

Kelsey started Sunday off with qualifying for the Breast Cancer Research Awareness Formula One race. Danny was quick to get to business and despite using a tire with over 25 laps on it, he was able to set the initial pole time with a 1:49.7. With one minute to go in qualifying, Kelsey was robbed of the pole position by 0.1 second.
With B Superstock as the first opportunity for Kelsey to gain recognition for the team’s sponsors, Danny left nothing on the table as the green flag dropped. He put the Pirelli shod GSXR-750 in the lead early and navigated the constantly improving conditions with a race fastest lap of 1:51.935 on lap 3 en route to a 3.5 second victory. Kelsey was both excited and apprehensive as the team’s aging 750 appeared to be losing the fuel pump and the bike lacked a considerable amount of acceleration. Although he was able to keep the pace up with the performance of the JRi Shock and GP Suspension Cartridges as well as the stopping power of the DP Brakes, the team would replace the fuel pump to address the situation before his next race on the trusted red Suzuki.

As many of the liter bike participants gridded up for A Superstock, Kelsey would have a chance to see if some last minute changes would give him the extra performance he needed for victory. As the starting lights set the field into turn one, Kelsey launched the M4 equipped Suzuki GSXR-1000 off the line and took the lead by the end of lap one running a 1:51.859 from a standing start and posting a 2.1 second lead over Derek Wagnon. On lap 3, Kelsey posted a race fastest lap time of 1:49.316 to build a 4 second lead. As the checkered flag fell, Kelsey was able to post another big win by 2.904 seconds.

With the Breast Cancer Research Awareness Formula One race just one race after the A Superstock race, the team elected to mount a new rear tire to ensure maximum performance for Kelsey as the hungry and aggressive field provides no quarter for any competitor. Kelsey launched the Barnett Clutch equipped and Dynojet tuned GSXR-1000 off the line well and was able to capture the lead on the opening lap with an aggressive pass in turn 3. Although Howard appeared to be off his normal pace, Kelsey wasted no time in taking advantage of the opportunities presented and posted a 1:50.772 opening lap and backed it up with a string of laps in the 1:48 and 1:49 range. By lap 4, Kelsey held a 2.6 second advantage and the stage appeared set for Kelsey to take his first Formula One win of the season.

Howard however was not relenting and began chipping away at Kelsey’s lead. On lap 5, Howard dropped a burner of a lap with a 1:47.857 lap and closed the gap to 1.9 seconds. Kelsey seeing his pit board immediately responded with a fast lap of his own on lap six with a 1:47.923 and increased his lead back to 2.4 seconds. At the checkered flag Kelsey was shown with a 3.516 second victory en route to the team’s third victory of the day.

With the third victory for Kelsey and the team under their belt, they were beginning to believe that five victories may be possible. At the same time, the team was really concerned as the next race up (B Superbike) would be against some really hungry young riders and team could not be sure that the issue with fuel delivery was solved with the fuel pump replacement. As the race started, Kelsey found himself in a dog fight. Although the Suzuki was working better, it was apparent performance was down from what the team has been used to. Kelsey was able to will the team’s DP Brakes equipped GSXR-750 to the point on lap 3 and posted a race fastest 1:50.605 on lap 5 en route to a 1.712 second victory. Danny realized that to sweep the day he had to complete one more “knock down drag out” race ahead of him. “I knew that our competitors were making some changes to up their pace and that I needed to be ready for a hard battle to not only win A Superbike but to sweep the day”, reflected Danny as he gridded up for A superbike.

As the starting lights got the field off the line, Kelsey was right. Danny emerged in 2nd place out of Turn 2, but quickly moved in behind early leader Howard. Kelsey made the decisive move with a pass in tricky turn eight to take the point on the opening lap and put down a blazing 1:50.628. From that moment on, Kelsey would see leads of “plus zero” on his pit board. This underscored the intense battle going on. On lap 4, the chess match between Kelsey and Howard got turned up a notch as lapped traffic began to emerge. The two Texans battled to stay on the “racing line” while safely lapping first and second year riders. As the lead shrunk each lap to as little as 0.3 seconds, Kelsey left nothing on the table and made decisive passes in lapped traffic to post his fifth victory of the day and take a 1.578 second victory. Kelsey was very pleased with the day and the lap times posted. Despite the horrible track conditions, he was able to run within 2.3 seconds of the track record even with running water on the track.

The team would not be able to compete without the special efforts of KMC Controls, RS Taichi, Pirelli, Dynojet, Vortex, Motoliberty, South Central Race Center, Motopia, M4 Exhausts, DP Brakes, K’s Motorsports, GP Suspension, JRi Shocks, Lone Star Track Days, Shoei Helmets, Hotbodies Racing, Silkolene, WRW Racing, Barnett, and Chicken Hawk Racing.

Georgetown, Texas rider Danny S. Kelsey posted three wins, two second place finishes, and gained valuable championship points at Texas World Speedway during CMRA Sprint Championship racing action. The second round of the CMRA Sprint Championship Series provided a great opportunity for the team to continue development on the new Suzuki GSXR-1000 and refinement of its trusted GSXR-750. Races would be held with a record turnout for the CMRA, so competition would be tight.

The weekend was anticipated to be another chess match for Kelsey and rival Ty Howard as the two riders split wins at MSRH. Howard turned in the fastest time, while Kelsey was consistent and quick off the starting line as he began development of his Pirelli shod GSXR-1000 that he is preparing AMA Superbike competition.

Friday practice went well for the team despite a full track. Lone Star Track Days always seems to be able to make Friday practice sessions more effective for teams and riders despite the enormous turnout and the team was able to gain valuable setup information. The team discovered some good baseline settings for the Pirelli superbike slick shod Suzuki GSXR-1000 and was able to run as fast as 1:45.1 despite the intense traffic. This would be the first race weekend that the team had time to install all of the Dynojet components including the PCV, Autotune, and Ignition Module. The performance increase with the full compliment of Dynojet components was very noticeable. Crew chief Marcus McBain fine-tuned both Suzuki’s Saturday with new valving for the GSXR-750 JRi Shock and adjustments to their GP Suspension cartridges to complement new clutch setups for both team bikes.

As Sunday morning practice started, a cold front that moved through Saturday evening caused havoc for many racers and unfortunately the team itself as 38 degree temperatures and 40mph wind gusts created a treacherous and dangerous environment. The CMRA wisely postponed some of the schedule to allow the temperatures to come up. Unfortunately, Kelsey was one of over a dozen victims in turn nine during the morning and the team’s GSXR-750 was heavily damaged before the decision to take a break in the practice session(s) by the CMRA race director. The actual culprit in Turn 9 was likely dirt on the track as the high winds were blowing dirt/sand on the track. This combined with the cold temperatures made for a very difficult track condition.

Despite a destroyed master cylinder, throttle, clip-on, and windshield, McBain and Kelsey were able to complete repairs and mount a new set of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa DOT tires in less than an hour. In fact Kelsey was able to make the last practice session to get a “shake down” lap on the repaired Suzuki. The team was thankful for the great quality of its Vortex rear sets, Hotbodies Racing Bodyworkd, and the M4 Exhaust system which held up incredibly well!

Kelsey lined up for the start of the 750 Superstock race and jumped into the lead on lap one while ensuring the Suzuki would be “ready to run at the limit” after being repaired in the morning. The weather conditions showed almost all racers were 3-4 seconds off the “regular pace”. Kelsey however put the hammer down to turn the fast lap of the race on lap two with a 1:48.971 and was able to cruise to a 4.1 second win. The race was a relief for Kelsey as the winds were literally picking bikes up as they ran through turn one at over 120mph and to be able to safely race at the pace he was setting was a relief to the team as well as other racers.

Open Superstock would be Kelsey’s first opportunity to put the DP Brakes equipped GSXR-1000 through its race pace for Sunday. As the electronic lighting system started the race, Kelsey took the hole shot and began to immediately build a lead. Danny would again set the fastest lap of the race on lap two with a 1:47.661 en route to victory. With the weather conditions still not optimal, Kelsey rode conservatively as the entire field showed mother nature the respect she is entitled to.

Next up for Kelsey was Formula One. This would be first “face off” with rival Howard. Both of the crew chiefs (McBain and (Brandon) Spradling) knew the two riders would push each other and it was discussed by both how fast they would go. It was debated if they would get into the 1:45's despite the difficult conditions. As the green flag dropped, Kelsey lead off the line and fought to get any type of gap on second place. As lap two completed, Kelsey was in second shadowing Howard. Both riders were shown running in the 1:44’s and quickly separating themselves from third place. The high speed chess match continued with Kelsey taking the lead entering turn one as the crossed flags were shown. Kelsey fought to maintain the point trying to put the race on ice, but Howard was pushing the Georgetown, Texas rider through turn 7 and 8. Kelsey surrendered the lead to Howard on lap 8. Kelsey worked to draft back into the lead, but came up 0.059 seconds short.

Kelsey would be facing Howard and most of the hungry Formula One racers in just a few races as most of the field was scheduled for a rematch in the Open Superbike class. Kelsey provided critical input to make changes and up his pace. The main culprit was the Suzuki GSXR-1000 would not turn once it started running in the low 1:44 range.

As the green flag dropped for the Open Superbike, Kelsey entered turn one in second place behind Howard. Danny moved to the point in turn five and clicked off an amazing 1:47.835 from a standing start to complete lap one. Kelsey continued to set the pace and posted a 1:43.6 on lap two. On lap 3, Kelsey surrendered the lead in Turn 8 to Howard. Kelsey shadowed Howard for the final lap and a half, and waited to make a draft move on the final lap. As the two riders entered the front straight for the checkers, Danny put down his best drive of the day on the banking, but came up 0.089 seconds short of victory. Kelsey was frustrated with the result, but also realized the team was able to get the big Suzuki 1000 working amazingly well despite treacherous conditions that claimed many riders during the weekend’s racing.

“I am really excited about what we got accomplished today with the development of our bike. There are only a handful of riders that have ever run a 1:43 pace or faster at TWS. Most of them have been top National riders. For us to get that done on our second weekend of riding this bike in this weather is just flat out amazing. It speaks volumes for Danny and our sponsor’s products that he accomplished the lap times he did”, observed crew chief Marcus McBain.

Despite the exhaustion of the day’s races, Kelsey lined up for 750 Superbike to complete his busy Sunday schedule. In the race, Danny took the lead on lap one and posted a 1:45.7 on lap two to put the race on ice and take a comfortable third victory for the day. The three wins and two runner-up spots stretched Kelsey’s lead for the CMRA #1 plate.

Danny Kelsey will continue to contest the entire CMRA series in his efforts to regain the number one plate. The team would not be able to compete at this level without the special efforts of KMC Controls, RS Taichi, Pirelli, Dynojet, Vortex, Motoliberty, South Central Race Center, Motopia, M4 Exhausts, DP Brakes, K’s Motorsports, GP Suspension, JRi Shocks, Lone Star Track Days, Shoei Helmets, Hotbodies Racing, Silkolene, WRW Racing, Chicken Hawk Racing. Kelsey will resume racing action at Eagles Canyon Raceway during the third round of CMRA Sprint Championship Action.

Just like the title of the article says, the Village Idiots mounted an impressive charge from behind to take the win by a mere 3.8 seconds in an 8-Hour race. We were leading the race by 2 laps at the halfway point, but a small crash set us back briefly. We quickly made repairs and were back on the track in no time, fighting for another Overall Win.

I now understand the meaning of the word “endurance”. I am amazed at the ability of the Yamaha YZF-R6 to take that kind of abuse.

When we put this team together our experienced endurance riders pointed to the eight hour race on the schedule and talked about tire changes, rider order, fatigue, and bike maintenance. Talking about an eight hour race and competing in an eight hour race are two very different things.

In preparation, we worked with Shandra Crawford to design a logo and banner. No matter what the eight hours would bring, we were going out in style.

Brad Kelly set up the team with a great start and quick pace. We had a flawless pit as the bike was handed off to Olay Bayramoglu. Olay went out and laid down fast and consistent laps. The first two hours went by relatively quickly for those of us not riding.

Mike Humphries was our next rider on deck. Unfortunately for me, he is also our normal fuel tower operator. I found out first hand exactly how hard it is to get the dump can in place when the pressure is on. When Mike completed his turn and handed the bike off to Sean Gurevich I was still fumbling around with the dump can…..this looks so easy, why does it take me 10 seconds to make the pieces go together?

As Sean’s ride came to an end, I suited up to wait for my turn. At the halfway point of the race I was excited about position and lap times. We were running with the top five in our class and top ten overall. I was happy with the performance of the new Fast Frank quick change system we purchased as I watched my team change the rear tire. The “dollar per second” gains instantly became apparent as I watched the axle zip in before mounting the bike.

I handed the bike off to Brad for his second stint and staggered exhausted back to the wall. I watched Brad pulling away and wondered out loud how anyone had enough energy to do two shifts. Olay just laughed as he suited up awaiting his turn to take us home.

Olay’s second turn on the bike is where the race got interesting. LSTD was out with blown fork seals, Locomotion dropped with bike issues, and we watched DTO remove their lower as we climbed by them. As we stood cheering with rest of the teams standing on the wall, Olay brought us home safely for a fantastic finish: second in class and fourth overall.

I am truly blessed to be able to race in this awesome club with such fantastic (and “in shape”) teammates and wonderful competition. I hope to see the grids full again at NOLA.

Privateer Tools would like to thank their sponsors: M4 Exhaust, USB Consulting
