Please, only one topic for the RRC discussion!!!!
Expert RRC,
The first race at OHR appeared to replace practice as there were 35 entries. How many would have truly entered if open practice would have been available?
There were 15 at Hallet, 5 at MSR. The weather did affect the MSR entries. Based on the 15 entries at Hallet the club could have offered open practice in that time slot offering additional track time and revenue for the club.
Novice RRC,
24 entries a OHR, 29 at Hallet, 13 at MSR. Again weather affected the true picture of what our turnout would have been at our last event.
Traditionaly entries towards the end of the season "lighten up". Some folks are hurt, broke, or both, another factor to consider in the fate of the RRC. Of the 22 "average" number of riders that entered the novice RRC races this season how many will be experts next year?
Will the novices next season feel the same with regards to the RRC format? How will the new experts along with the existing ones feel?
One thing for sure, 2 rounds of practice at each event does not serve the membership of the CMRA, nor does it help to keep the club financially sound.
If we need to roll the dice in our 2005 and beyond schedule open practice replacing the RRC makes sense and works all the time whether in the beginning of the season, or the end.

Re: Please, only one topic for the RRC discussion!!!!
Hey Steve - by your post, it sounds as though eliminating the RRC is in large part a financial decision for the club. Does this mean that the cost to participate in open practice is going up significantly?
By my bad math, the first Oak Hill RRC brought in $4185 in entry fees (AM & EX combined). That seems like a pretty big nut to match with $35 entry fees, in fact, you would have to have 120 riders enter and pay for practice to cover match that figure.

John,
It's not the first OHR RRC that we are worried about, it's the second, third, and fourth. I believe most of the entries at the first RRC entered to shake off the rust/practice. It dropped from 35 to 15 in the expert field at Hallet. 5/weather related at MSR?
18 average entries do not justify the time on the schedule. Remember everyone we are talking about a Saturday schedule issue of freeing up time, not anything to do with Sunday sprints.
If we provide extended open practice next season the cost per rider will increase by a few dollars above the current $35.00 for 2 practice sessions. The amount of open practice would exceed 2 hours.

Fair enough. Sounds like something to give a try next year. Thanks for the explanations and some of the insight behind the decision.

Looking back at result sheets, available on the CMRA home page, from 1999 to now, I've come up with the following numbers:
In 1999, of the top twenty entries based on season points, no experts and only one novice (Craaiiiggg!) made all eight RRC events; no experts and two novices entered just one, 6 experts and 7 novices entered just two, four experts and four novices entered three events, and four experts and one novice entered at least four events (28 of 40 entered half or less of the total events).
In 2000, of the top 30 entries per class (AM and EX) based on season points in 6 events, GTO AM 1 person made all events, GTU AM 2 people made all events, and GTL AM 3 made all events; in EX, making all events were 0, 3, and 0 racers, respectively. In AM, 15 made only 1 GTO, 13 made only 1 GTU, and 10 made just 1 GTL; in EX, making just one event were 12, 8, and 15 (again, respectively). In AM GTO, 4 made 2 races, GTU saw 16 making 2 events, and GTL had 10 making 2 events; in EX, entries for 2 events were 6, 12, and 7. This means that 66 of 90 AMs made a third or less of the available events, and half the EXs made a third or less.
Results weren't available online for 2001.
2002 saw three rounds of GT racing, total number of racers for the season in GTO/GTU/GTL AM were 13/31/22; total EX racers were 26/23/21. Entries per event (OHR/OHR/HAL)in GTO AM were 7/8/7, GTU AM was 13/23/12, GTL AM was 11/6/10; EX saw GTO 18/14/9, 18/13/11, and 16/12/11.
2003 had five rounds, with total racers in the AM events: GTO 23, GTU 30, and GTL 27; EX had 21, 19, and 20. Experts had 14 only making one GTO round, 11 made only 1 GTU event, and 11 made 1 GTL event; AMs had 13 making 1 in GTO, 15 raced 1 in GTU, and 14 made 1 GTL race. 3 EXs made 2 GTO rounds, 4 raced 2 GTU events, and 2 made 2 GTL events; AMs were 5, 10, and 6 respectively. GTO EXs making all events were 2, GTU EX had 2, and GTL EX had 3; GTO AMs making all events had 2, GTU had 1, and GTL had 3.
2004 so far has had 3 of 4 RRC events. We've had 41 total EX racers and 40 total NV racers. 4 EXs have made all three rounds, and 7 NVs have made all rounds; 31 EXs have only made one round; 35 NVs have only made one round. 6 EXs have made two rounds, and 7 NVs have made two events. EX entries at OHR/HAL/MSR were 38, 15, and 8; NV entries were 27, 38, and 21. MSR saw 13 NVs and 5 EXs actually race due to the weather.
It's fairly clear that most people who enter the RRC/GT races, especially this season and last, have been doing so just for the track time, and very few people have been seriously racing for points or money.
Eliminating this series gives the obvious majority of you who really just want track time what you want. When next season's specific event schedules come out, we'll have four or five open practice afternoons after most mini endurances or before or after most shorter big bike endurances.
In my four years on the BoD, I've discovered that NO decision we make is going to make everybody happy; however, I and the rest of my fellow board members were elected by the membership to serve the best interests of the club as a whole, and I think we're doing the right thing.
I'll be happy at the end of this season to become just a regular racer again; and if I think the BoD is screwing something up next year or the year after, I'll be complaining loudly, and I'll be doing so using the knowledge I've gained from four years of actually helping to make this crazy thing work.
