Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
OIL FILTERS
You MUST use a hose clamp to hold the filter and then wire the filter securely to your bike. K&N filters, too.
If you have the older side exhaust ZX636, The filter must be torqued to 18ft/lbs (really) before you slide the clamp on there. The stock Kawi clamp is NOT ACCEPTABLE, use an aftermarket one, just like everyone else. Wire the clamp to something secure FROM something secure.
DO NOT loop the safety wire around the metal band, it will not hold anything. wrap the safety wire around the worm gear or through a hole on the slack in the band.
DO NOT anchor the wire back or forward of the clamp. The wire should pull parallel to the clamp in a CLOCKWISE direction. If you do not know what that direction is, look at a clock for a few seconds and burn that image into your head. Safety wire has to be anchored at TWO points, don't loop the wire around the thing you are trying to secure, that's just silly an we will laugh at you about it.
DO NOT, under any circumstances, tell any of the tech inspectors that something 'passed that way all season!' You are hearby warned, anyone uttering these words will flunk out of tech immediately and will have to wait in line again, NO EXCEPTIONS. We're tired of it and you should know better. By the way, if I hear one other person tell me they will wire whatever after they change the tires, I'm going to explode. The rulebook clearly states that the bike must be ready to race BEFORE coming to tech.
BELLY PANS AND SAFETY WIRE
Here it is, the definitive rule:
If you can not see the wire, we can not see the wire. If you have someone wire the bike for you, take a few minutes and look for yourself before coming to tech. Again, if you can not see it, we can not see it. As always, if you have a question about something, ask us first, before coming to tech. We will gladly explain it to you, once ou are in line, the time we can take to discuss something greatly affects the wait in line for everyone else.

Re: Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
Derek,
Man, that was a killer butt chewing you gave the three prov novs on the grid in race 5!
Be forewarned, show up not knowing your grid position and you are going to get it from Derek.
For what it is worth: you can make your race weekend much easier and safer if you have a little attention to detail.

From now on, those who do not understand the benefit of writing down your grids on duct tape will get sent to the back of the grid with my astroturf flip flop up your arse.

Re: Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
Anyone have pix of how their SV's oil filter was wired. Mine is pretty secure, and had made it through tech so far, but Derek D did comment he wasn't thrilled about my wiring, since it wasn't parallel to the clamp. Problem is, I don't see a good anchor point that would put it parallel.
I know a ton of SVs are out there and must be making Derek happier than I did, and that I'm probably missing some obvious method.
Any education appreciated.
Thanks
Roger

Re: Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
Was it Delpero or me that didn't like it?
You know, you have 360 degrees to find something to wire it to. Sometimes, you can drill a small hole in a knock-off tab on the pan.
The reason I didn't like yours was because safety wire has no torsional rigidity, so if you go parallel to the axis you screw something, you are not getting maximum strength.

Delpero, but I understand both of your meanings.
Just haven't found a good place, even going all 360-like.

Re: Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
Roger, I'm pretty sure mine is pulling clockwise, and is a perpendicular tangent to the radius at the point of attachment, so I'll snap a couple of pics when I get home from work if no one else does before then.

Re: Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
NNNolden, That is exactly the way that everything should be wired. Thanks for using the geometric terms. Sometimes, I don't think it gets through to some people.

Thanks both.
Look forward to the pix David.
I don't want to end up in the problem child category with Kevin or the Dereks.

Roger-
Sorry for the delay, I kinda forgot about this thread... Derek, I hope you don't mind the slight threadjack.
Here are a couple of pics:

From the right side: (Note the safety wire is actually attached to two small bolts, holding them in place as well. Some clever previous owner did this.)

Re: Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
Thanks David. I too apologize if this was a threadjack. I'm hoping given the number of SVs, and the number of relatively new folks on them, that it's ok and useful though. I now have mine like that, and have an idea for an even more parallel one using the starter bracket. That soft metal drills like lemon merengue.
Mmmmm. Piiiiiie.

Re: Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
Sorry NNNolden, but I got out my protractor and I'm measuring a 21.5 deg angle between that safety wire and the tangent to the oil filter hose clamp. I'm gonna have to protest your entry at the next race. Sorry.
And you call yourself a chemist/metallurgist/computer network expert/safety wirer extraordinairre/HI Express stayer.... Sheesh.

Re: Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
Dave... I never said the safety wire was perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder (oil filter). While I admit that pulling in a 22 degree angle is not optimal, the perpendicular component is still worth 96 percent of the magnitude of the vector (safety wire), whatever that may be. I think 96 percent efficiency is acceptable in this case...

If your filter is mounted on the oil cooler, yes. But, ALL bikes must use hose clamps. I will no longer let anyone through tech with the top nut on a K&N filter or a factory spec oil filter clamp.

Well you said *something* about perpendicular, and that's close enough. Also, a 22 deg angle would give you 92.7% effectiveness, not 96, so you can easily see that that would be quite marginal.
Okay, I have to say that seriously, that's pretty swell safety-wiring.

Derek needs beer.
My first time through tech, I was told that he (Kevin) would really like to see certain points wired (it was a personal preference)
My second time through tech I think I got the comment of "Holy Crap, you must have 42 pounds of safety wire on that bike". That's embellished, I think there were only 15.
My third time through tech they showed me points to mount to that would make it easy to see.
I never had a bike bounce from tech.
Simple rules I followed when wiring. If I thought it should be wired, it was. If I thought they wanted me to wire it, it was.
You know what direction the bolt went in, so you know which direction tightens it. 1/4 to 1/2 around and wire in the direction that you screwed it in. That simple.
I would recommend a drill press. it will save a lot of broken bits.
if all else fails, ask. I've seen Derek and Kevin both pre tech bikes and go over what they want to see when it's on the block.
If you think you will look stupid asking before hand, just think how stupid you will look when they send you back to your pit to fix something.
It's about safety folks, hence the name of the wire. And they do take it seriously.

Re: Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
Last year I secured my Oil Galley Plug with silicone glue, but I was told to safety wire it… it was a pain getting that thing safety wired, but I did it. No question asked. I have a new bike and was hoping someone can clarify how I should secure the Oil Galley Plug this year. I know the rule book says we can use silicone glue, but I think this rule was in place last year as well.

Re: Tech clarifications, oil filters and bellypans
OK, no snide remarks
The best way to drill this is to use a drill press with a jig. Go really slow and use a lubricating oil.
Silicone is a ONE race fix to a problem found at the track, not a season long panacea.

On the K&N topic, If it's done right it won't spin off. But, I'll do as I'm told like a good little http://eclectech.co.uk/b3ta/sheep-googly.gif
