Did not hear that, thanks. Just checking, I know how quickly rumors can spread based on a simple fact that may be irrelevant (the schedule not being updated).
Well this sucks. I thought we'd have at least another year or two, because you know trees are easier to knock down than a whole race track.
I think 12 hours would be the limit with sprint races happening the next day.
not if we start if Friday evening...
Let's not think about ways that a 24 our "can't" happen, or would be "hard to do"... let's focus on how we will make it work. Nothing easy is worth doing... or something like that.
Bucket. List. Race.
Once in (most of our) lifetime type of event!
Friend of mine, recently retired from professional racing, said he's "in" and will race.
Let's
Do
This
Dang
Thang!
Read up folks FIM World Endurance Regs
24 hour races typically run noon to noon.
Tom, ok I hear ya, instead of why we can't, I'll just throw out the hard questions or things that come to mind.
I think I know a few retired racers that would make this event, starting with everyone in our Hall of Fame.
Think you could get the team of Howard-Spies-Edwards-Scwhantz-Spencer-Polen? (aassuming 6th rider allowed). Maybe they could bring some sponsorship with them, not to mention publicity. You would also be doing all of us common folks the ability to say we raced against (fill in whichever name) at the TWS 24.
scwhantz raced last year with us at the TWS 8 hour as well as NOLA...quit humbling being passed by him and he just looks like he is barely trying just chillin on top of the bike the way he does. super nice guy, Im sure it wouldn't take much convincing to bring him back for an event like this.
that being said im bring my prov-nov shirt from the back of the closet for a collection of signatures :)
If you guys get it to happen and I'm not somewhere else I can't get out of I'll be there to help. I even have a couple of rolls or partial rolls of reflective tape to mark the track edges. I'll see what other 24 specific stuff is floating around too (not much needed other than good flashlights for the flags and we always used flares for a red after dark).
We need to make this happen. I've spoken to just a few folks I work with, and this has the potential to draw quite the crowd.
I'm sure the KC area contingent would jump at the chance.
Any way you could let the younger riders (kids) turn a few laps or even have a mini sprint race afterwards? Talk about a bucket list item for kids!
Will the two-hour LWE Endurance be before or after the 24-hour event? For those of us that don't do BBE.
:Whatever:
I don't see a way to have a LWE with this event unfortunately. For a race that starts at 6pm the previous day and ends at 6pm the next, there's nothing left for anything else.
Maybe others with real race direction experience will be able to find a solution to that?
It would be nice for LWE to have one more meaningful event (longer than 2 hours) at TWS before the doors are closed.
I think this 24-hour event is massively cool. I work for Philips. We do tracks all over the world (Qatar, Olympics, Singapore F1 race,etc.). I will see if they would be interested in (maybe through a customer or directly help out. Doesn't hurt to ask the folks in the Netherlands.
I have been going there since 1976. I have so many fond memories both racing and spectating.
Stay awake? That's the best part, you get to sleep!
Only people I know that can actually sleep on Hot Pit are Dirk & Brian !!!
I have fallen asleep in the hot pit during an endurance race. Something about the sound of motorcycles racing around the track must be soothing to me.
On topic though, this would be something that we would most definitely do. We might have to make some sacrifices earlier in the year, but this might be our only chance to run a 24 hour race. I wouldn't miss it, especially at one of our favorite tracks that will be no more.
If the ladies are up to it, and the money works, I'd bring The G-Baby Endurance Team in a heart beat...
Hellcats are in!!! Let's make this happen...! Bud is taking the first stint
bud has already won the 24hr... he did it in 2-1/2 hrs
Corner workers simply hold a flashlight and shine the light on the flag as they wave it.
I must say this is one exciting ideas on here Tom! You got my attention! This would be so much more than a race...it's a event! Great way for CMRA to draw attention to the org. I see a packed, sold out event here!!
This would be fun! In if it happens.
No Coasting owner and team captain are in agreement, we will field a BBE team for any of the proposed night races.
my only concern is the level of professionalism it will take to make an event like this work. Even though it should be obvious this is a huge cost for the teams even split 5 or 6 ways. I can still see people not putting more than adequate lighting or skimping on a tire here or there to because the 100 galleon of gas and $1500 entry fee.
Rough break down
entry fees $1500
tires $2500
fuel. $500
so just the basics here have cost more than our whole budget last year for mini endurance and probably for some BBE teams out there. I'm prepare to make the sacrifices else where if needed to prepare for this event. I'm not so sure other will and they'll try to cheap out the event itself.
This might be a little old but it's a good read for anyone wanting to attempt this. What's amazing is the FIM 24 hour races are done with a 3 rider team, wow!

Sad to hear TWS is over, but what a great idea Tom.
I would come back to race this for sure.
At least we have a chance at doing something like this, unlike with Oak Hill's demise (where I just heard the pavement is gone now).
I am 100% in on this!!!! Absofreakinglutely!!!!
Question now as we put this together...and forgive as I haven't read the entire 10 pages...any chace we could be approved for headlights???
My personal best, certified miles (it was on street though) 1,835 in 24 hours.
I'm so freaking in...
My personal best on a racebike? 11:23.15..umm...minutes....
As someone who saves pretty much all of their money to go racing, I can't imagine a better way to spend it. At first, the 12 hour format sounded to me like the way to go, but the more I thought about it, 24 is what I'm all in for. The first track day I ever went to with my dad was at TWS, and I can't imagine a better send off. I have to believe that sponsors and media would be all over this as well. Things like this don't happen often (if ever) in the U.S. for two-wheeled machines, and I can't believe I would have the opportunity to participate in an event like this. I am actively searching out solutions to some of the problems mentioned here.
Tom, it may be helpful if in the first post you put a list of potential road blocks to this event so the club can stay focused on what the real issues are. With that in clear view, we can stay focused on the obstacles we need to overcome.
Realistically, I don't think most of you realize the struggle that a 24hr race entails.. I've done it in a car, and while it was the most amazing time I've EVER had in my life, it was the scariest time of my life at the same time. I drove most of the night because my teammates were never awake for pit stops/driver changes... As for corner workers, we can't get the required number of corner workers for every weekend, how are we going to get 2 12hr shifts?
Every corner and every corner worker station would require lighting (for flags), possibly even a speed-limiting chicane before turn 1. AND forward lights on all of the bikes, and a tail/brake light. We had 3 Hella 500's and standard brights on our car, and it's top speed was 97mph at ECR; and we all know how horrible sportbike headlights are.. We were already out-driving those lights. I just don't see it ever being safe enough/possible.
That being said - I don't want this post to sound negative because it's not! If a 24hr race happens at TWS, I will come out of 'retirement' to participate. I want this to happen! I want to help any way I can to make this happen! TWS has become my favorite track, I would love to remember it with a 24hr BBE.
I remember hearing about Ty and Track Tactics scheduling a night track day at ECR, did that happen? If so, do you have any input on night racing?
All these ideas sound awsome.
Hell, I haven't even raced to get my yellow shirt off yet and I'm all hyped about this idea.
But......
It would be so much better with more than one keg and possibly some fireworks to literally go out with a bang!
Hell, I'd even volunteer my electrical services to see this go off properly.
2 a.m. brainstorm -
- Make it a charity event to get some help with the funding and event planning. Depending on who it is, they might even bring funding to the table.
- Get the city of Bryan involved, and elevate it to a "community send off" to TWS. That way maybe they'll carry some of the water on bringing in local businesses who might sponsor the lights, etc. Might also be a way to get free corner workers...
- Or make it a 'CMRA Racing thanks the City of Bryan for xx years of Motorcycle Racing" theme. That might take an advertising investment, but you'd get a health membership spike from the area in 2016
- See if the WERA guys want to play. Certainly invite them to compete.
I know that this might take more work to get it going if you did it this way but once it had momentum, it would take care of itself if you got those other entities recruited.
