Alright, Keith...
So There is another way to do the allen head bolts.
If it's steel, you can weld a small nut to it and wire the nut.
Yeah Keith, I know, Taco Land!

I think it is great there are these guides posted on the message board, but fact is not everyone reads the MB. No one should recieve a "Butt chewing" at tech unless the rider is way out of line in attitude. Keep in mind attitude of the tech inspector can humanly reflect to the riders attitude in a negative way causing unnecissiary "*** chewing/unproductive arguments". I am very sad to hear that several yellow shirts got chewed out. They should be corrected on their mistakes in a friendly manner and not "scared off".

Delapro is the geeky one with lime on his breath and Tequila on his mind.
Thanks Derek. I stared at a clock. I still couldn't figure out clock wise or clock stupid but I did decide it was time to go hit some golf balls.

Thanks Newman. I just got that nauseous feeling thinking about all the tequila I drank at Laguna!
I'm not sure though what my drinking too much cheap tequila has to do with safety wiring?

Leo, Yes, belly pans must be off. Instead of declaring that certain models have them removed it is more democratic to just say everybody. By the way, no one got 'chewed out' at the hill unless they uttered any of my favorite sayings- "it passed last time" or "thats not in the rule book"
Pax,Kevin the still happy tech guy

(I had this in its own thread originally, but it got no love there so I deleted it and am trying this thread. If I'm putting this question in the wrong place, can someone please point me in the right direction?)
Hi. I have an older bike (Yamaha FZR400) that I am prepping and I am hoping to make tech as painless as possible for me and the inspector(s).
The bike has fork drain plugs, and they are going to be awkward to safety wire--they are small Phillips head plugs seated in a recession cast into the fork tube. Another old-bike guy I ran into at a track day told me the tech inspector has allowed him to use aluminum-backed tape to secure his fork drain plugs, and showed me that he had done so on his bike.
Is the metallic tape going to be okay for my fork drain plugs? I don't want to put in hours of work trying to figure out how to wire these things if I don't have to, but I REALLY don't want to be scrambling around on race day trying figure it out at the track if the tape turns out to be unacceptable.
Thanks,
Andrew Sukach

You don't have to safeT wire them. Silicone or the alum. tape will work.

^^^
Yep, I can live with both of those examples. I recommend .032" wire for both of these locations, especially the oil fill. It looks like you have, but can't confirm that from the pix.

I checked my safety wire and it's only .028" so I'll redo with the .032"... Any other places that the .032" is preferred/recommended?

I wouldn't sweat it unless you have some .032 available. Lots of people use wire as small as .020 and that's fine, although I don't recommend that for oil fills, oil drains and oil filters.

These types of safety-pin style retaining pins seldom present themselves as issues, but ideally Joe is correct. The best solution is to simply use wire. You didn't buy yourself any time or convenience if one of these retaining devices fails and allows your oil fill to come loose and cause havoc.

I'll make some adjustments... thanks for the feedback.
