I honestly don't know Michael. I have to trust in the ability of the people I elected to the board to make decisions based on the best interest of the club. I don't know all the variables around the promotion so I cant give you an educated guess on why they did what they did.
I will say I believe the formula we currently use isn't an accurate measure of a persons riding ability to be promoted to expert. IMO we should adjust the formula or dedicate a little more research before promoting racers. That being said, there's always going to be someone at the bottom of that promotion list and that will always result in a debate of "where do we draw the line".
There's no perfect answer to any of this and that's where we have to trust in the ability of our BOD to make sound decisions based on the best interest of the club.
And that's why there was an appeals process...said rider did appeal and was addressed individually by the elected bod and RD and made a valid point and was allowed to stay novice correct?.....Lets try this self promote thingymabob before we start burning those BOD members (im out in a few weeks and i'll help)....FYI we have already had several request to be moved to experts.
When I got promoted to Expert I had no choice. Connie Brothers, who really ran the club back in the day even though she was only club secretary/treasurer, came up to me after my first full season on a mini (YSR50) at the end of 1989 and informed me that I was going to be an expert for 1990. I had just bought a 400 and intended to stay novice so I could learn about racing with the Big Boys, so I complained and argued and was ignored.
In retrospect, I was glad she promoted me because it got me the hell out of big bike novice practice, which was and probably still is a real eye opener. ULW practice, where N and E are combined, now reminds me of that. IMHO, IF the ULW grids keep growing, for safety reasons the practices are going to HAVE to be separated, and trust me, you'll want to be an Expert at that point!
My first Expert year on the big bike I crashed A LOT in sprint races trying to keep up with the pack where their speed exceeded my talent, but I learned a lot; my second year I did pretty good, and my third year with a newer bike I won my first two sprint championships.
If you have the luxury of being asked to promote yourself to Expert, do it and don't look back. IMHO. YMMV. Not valid where prohibited.
Man, where was this option last year when I got bumped to expert?? Can I self-demote?? There is such a disparity in big expert classes (look at SBC times) that I am almost embarrassed to grid up with the amazing guys out there. I can GUARANTEE sandbagging will ensue.
If sandbagging ensues then some are going to hate me and Walter more than they already do...…..
The line had previously be something like a .70ish rider index. The person last year was like a .12.
They had to appeal twice and it took so long for the bod to make a decision that the person just registered as a novice, which finally got the board to respond.

It's hard to make bad passes when you don't make any passes :-(. It's easy to be passed cleanly when you are 10 seconds a lap slower than the "slow" experts.
I think the self promote is a great idea. It will keep people racing longer which is what the club needs. Hopefully the BOD is reaching out to people they know and think should be promoted, like some have with me.
Who is “the person”? Did they keep racing after this ?
