I know where 1 is that has a ninja 250 motor in it!! But only legal for formula 3 and up the way I read the book.... very trick bike tho

What classes will it be competitive Walter ?.... Does an Aprilia RS250 Cup chassis work for the project ?
Jim Hall had enough TZs to start a factory, but I think he has thinned the heard over the years. You might give him a call and see if he has anything left.

I haven't pulled the trigger cuz im worried about some details, mainly the swingarm angle that youre left to deal with when you lower the bike...it's pretty flat. An RS honda chassis may work well and an aprilia 250 sounds pretty good too. The resiliency of a chrome-moly frame sounds the best to me but I don't know if anyone makes a frame that will make a conversion possible. Remember the Jesse Davis 450..might ask him about some of the handling characteristics. I would think it's important to match the engine's power characteristics with the chassis that you select. Geoff Maloney at GP Tech has parts for conversions too. And a lot of knowledge. Keep us posted.
I've seen those but I really want a real GP chassis. The Honda RS250 is out because of the right side chain drive. I'm looking for a TZ250 now. Ill consider The Aprilia RS250 but I'm spooked a bit because I don't know much about them. The TZ would be my first choice.
I wanted to build one of these a decade ago, and I still do. The TZ is the best option for multiple engine fit. A roller is difficult to find. You'll want at least a '91 and more likely a '94 or later. I know where a complete Honda RS250 is, but it's more work to get it to work. The key is the center line of the swingarm pivot relative to countershaft sprocket, and the distance between the two. I haven't seen many Aprilia RS250s that have been converted, but remember those Cup bikes are lacking compared to full-on purpose-built GP bikes.

I agree the TZ is the way to go. I wanted to build an all Honda bike but I don't think that's realistic after doing some research. I have ran across several Aprilias but I would rather go with the full out GP chassis. I want to give Trey the best package I can.

I don't know about the Aprilia 250 either but i'll bet you can find them cheap. Ive ridden a few of the 125s at the track and they handle extremely well and are easy to ride. give Ashley Peterson a call too. We were chatting awhile back and he was mentioning a guy with an RS Honda chassis if you go that direction.
The Aprilia 250s are fantastic, but long in the tooth now and parts are $$$.
like i said. get with Dean on the bike's whereabouts. There's a lot to the swap, its pretty complicated and requires quite a bit of custom work, machined parts, etc. If you can find my old bike, that'd be the way to go.

this place specializes in TZ250/thumper swaps, mainly big Rotax's, but they might have some rollers or know the best place to find them if you still want to build your own. JD's bike sure looks nice though!
i always thought a cr500 motor would be sweet stuffed in a 250 frame. prob not legal for anything though

I have talked to 4 different people that have one but they all seem to think they are made of diamonds and unicorn tears. Way too much money for a rolling chassis. Like $4000.

That's actually cheaper than what I've found do far. One guy had a frame, swing arm, and rear wheel and was asking more than that. I'm going to look at one other option then punt for now. Looks like Trey will likely be on a EX300 or CBR500 next season.
John is right... friend of mine stuffed a CR500 motor in a race frame and it Vibrated so much, it was unrideable!
I had a CR500 motard a few years back. Lots of power and big fun, but it had low limits, mostly due to a very sub-par chassis. Any decent 450 4-stroke is a much better engine for roadracing. They are more forgiving, make more torque, have more bottom end grunt, have far less finicky jetting, and provide a much smaller risk of it sticking and tossing you down the road if the piston decides to become one with the cylinder wall. The 500 is far easier to rebuild, though because there are, of course, more parts in the 4-stroke to maintain. As a guy who was raised on 2-strokes and had several TZs back in the day, that's not easy for me to admit, but it's true. Now, in terms of sheer fun, a 500 powered TZ would make me smile. It would have, at the very least, a chassis worthy of handling the light switch power, which, with just a few mild mods, could get 60 reliable ponies.

FYI i paid $5500 for my 1995 TZ250 whole, perfect and in running condition in 2006.
shifter kart guy gave me $3000 for the motor and electronics.
I raced a CR500, the motor sucked as a roadracer. You would need to make a different cylinder map and it could work. But still too much trouble. IMHO
