Oh, it's way better than the 1125. I have most of those parts. With the 1125 kit, it was expensive and prone to failure. With the 1190 kit, it actually works pretty decently.Quote:

I have always felt like the front brake was a liability vs. the traditional two-disc set up, but I've been able to get mine to where it's not something I think about anymore. The main "trick" is mounting the rotor with copper washers so the wheel itself becomes a heat-sink. The other "tricks" are common to even dual disc set-ups: removing the retaining clips for better airflow, using good fluid, etc.
I've no doubt at a professional level the brake needs a lot of TLC. But at my skill level, a rotor lasts about 6 months, and they are less expensive to service compared to the dual-disc set-ups. A new rotor and fresh mounting hardware is under $200.

The rotors on the EBR system lose their "bite" over time. Servicing them with some 100-grit helps (as is also the case with 2 disc systems), but yes, they wear out more quickly than 2 disc systems do. Rotors are definitely consumables on the EBR system when used in racing applications.
If you are willing to pay a weight penalty, you can get 6mm rotors that last longer. I don't like them; they make the bike harder to turn.
The EBR system is lighter than most dual-disc set-ups by 2-4 pounds. I'm not convinced, however, that once spinning at 60 mph they have less gyroscopic resistance to directional changes than do traditional designs. I'm not sure how to test it, though.
Also worth considering: Your SV carries more cornerspeed, weighs less, and needs to slow less for each corner than my 1125r. So, your demands for braking are also less.

My experience with SVs is that they are about the same as most liter bikes in the +400# range wet.
Jim,take a 1/4 hp router flick it on,rotate it off its axis.do the same with 1/2HP router (about 2lbs difference) youll quickly see , the difference 1/2 lb makes.......(armature weight difference)
Fun fact! According to the rules... It's not eligible for hwt twins..... Just f1..... That is what we were told when we wanted to race in cmra..... Also another fun fact.... Everytime I rode te ebr I had new complete brake system. EVEREYTIME..... Practice, race, roll around the pits...... It is a sweet bike for sure! And I'm glad there is a more affordable bike available!

granted, this was from '02, I wonder how an 1190 wheel/brake compares to a more recent GSXR/R6/CBR wheel/brake package?
If I may offer an idiot's opinion... The ZTL brakes work ok for the aggressive street rider and occasional trackday person. Anymore than that and they overheat and warp rotors ( which are fairly cheap) More so I think the lighter weight helps Buells meet their un-sprung weight, mass centralization and steep head angel goals while still giving the same feel as any bike without being twitchy.( MoI) I thought perhaps watching the 8 pistons in action in the AMA that they had solved the overheating and warping issues with the new slotted rotor and cooling ducts until I saw This....Quote:

Moment of inertia is pretty easy to calculate for simple shapes like a disk. If someone wants a comparison run, provide the inner and outer diameters and thickness, # of rotors, and material (assuming it's all stainless steel) and I'll do the calcs. Can't remember the formula off the top of my head but have it at work. So provide that info for the rim brake disc on the Buell and for some comparison dual disk regular bike and I'll work up the numbers. The formulas is an elaborate version of integral (mr^2), so the radius piece is pretty strong and I'd guess the rim brake is likely higher in inertia.
The EBR rotor is an OD of about 16" and an ID about 12", it's 5mm thick. Ordinary stainless steel.
