Thread: I like technology what about you

While I do see some of Ted's points and we did try and get together I still feel this should of been done by now. When we initially got together the system was I would say at 20% as we were still discussing ideas and what system to use to drive it all. I know as a board member and being in charge of the technical stuff you wanted to take the lead and drive how it was built. I tried to follow up with you in regards to thing, but as you stated spare time was at a minimum. This is where in my opinion you let go of having complete control and just give someone the specs and guidelines and let them finish it. Be it they take your existing system , learn what you have and finish it or start from scratch at the end of the day the project is complete. Granted you weren't the one to finish it , its done at the end of the day.

From day 1 I offered to take the lead on this and run with it. All I would of needed time wise from you is , "Hey take a look at this, tell me what works and what doesn't". From there I could have made the changes/suggestions and all that would of been needed time wise was reviewing the work that was done.

of course i say this blindly, but blindly it seems right
With all due respect. Online Registration will happen, when it happens, if it happens. That's it. Its easy to sit on the outside and look in and think that you know what the club need or doesn't need. The truth is that none of you actually do. Most people barely know what they need or want. Well I'm on the inside and I can tell you with 100% certainty that there are many things that we need that are more important than online registration. Any system that will likely only benefit 20% of our members that will in any way makes our jobs more difficult in terms of adding steps on the backend or that makes at track registration more difficult is simply not ready for prime time. The bottom line is this, WE WILL GET TO IT WHEN WE GET TO IT AND WE WILL USE THE PEOPLE THAT WE CHOSE TO USE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

i will have to politely agree to disagree on your statement that none of us knows what this club needs or doesnt need. While we may not have the experience of sitting on the BOD or running it from the race directors position, that doesnt discount our knowledge of racing as a whole. In regards to what needs to be done and when it needs to be done and what other priorities the clubs has, well I can see your point on that. But that still goes back to the original comment made today that someone with knowledge and the skill to get this done, while not affecting the day to day operations of the staff and BOD of the CMRA, was not given the opportunity to help. If we didnt care about this club and continuing to make it the best racing organization in the country, then we would keep our mouths shut. It's a club Walter. We all enjoy it, we all love what CMRA stands for, and we all want to continue to see it grow and be the best.

And why are you always yelling at me? lol

For what it's worth, any project management Ted would need to do would likely take just as much time as doing the work himself. That's my experience anyway.

With all due respect Walter, I am sure we do not know what is going on behind the scenes and know what is needed or wanted. But with a system that is "correctly" built and put in place it shouldn't add any steps in terms of back-end registration and honestly should make back and front end administration twice as easy.
I am willing to bet that if this system was in place and you left mail/fax/email registration you would see that more than 20% of your members would use it. Thinking that only 20% would use it I think is a bit off. I am also open to hear in what ways in the back-end (because I honestly don't know what is going on) that this would add any additional steps. I find it hard to believe that Nancy enjoys printing out all those forms, organizing them and dealing with all that leading up to a race weekend.

    And in regards to
Its easy to sit on the outside and look in and think that you know what the club need or doesn't need. The truth is that none of you actually do. Most people barely know what they need or want.
well I think if the members KNEW what was needed and how they could help you would possibly get more help and offers than if they didn't know.

Some examples off the top of my head:
    Nancy's back end work load:
With a system that won't allow for incomplete or invalid forms that should reduce A LOT of her time in that department.
The need to bring all those paper forms to each and every race, gone. Yes you can get signatures w/o paper for forms.
Organizing all the printed/emailed forms on Nancy's behalf before the race day, gone. It will all be organized and structured in the system.
Someone can submit a form at 4am the day before they show up and guess what they are in the system. No need for the cut-off times before traveling to the events because it has to be printed.
Grid print out, Press a single button done

@Josh, I don't see how much project management it would take. I deal with project management and application development daily, if the PM has to spend that much time then whoever is doing the work either isnt getting full specs or the developer is ****. Here Josh I built this system for you , go check it out and let me know what you think based on the specs you gave me? If in a year you are telling me you don't have time to do that then I don't know what to say. It should take lets say a week of time here and there tops to create a specs document for a system like this and then its handed off and he can get back to the things that are keeping him busy.

Greg - The situation is different than a typical solution that you would normally create. There are things you cannot, I cannot, automate per the way the registration is designed.

Paper copies well never go away and neither will hand written signatures (not a bash on the club, just reality from a legal aspect). When you accept that fact you will begin to see some obstacles that may or may not be worth someone's time.
