Thread: Another dies at the IOM

    Another dies at the IOM

And you guys think NPR is dangerous? The IOM is simply insane. I don't care how much press and such it gets, if I were over there and looking for a name, I'd never try to make it at the IOM. It's just plain nuts.

Yeah, same guy. But Jack has got a point. I was talking with a friend of mine about this last night and we wondered how long this kind of sport could last. When they started this tradition, bikes were not hardly capable of a 40 MPH lap avg. and now they do it at 125 MPH. How much narrower can your safety margins get on that incredibly difficult course? Regardless of the bikes and rider capabilities the margin for error on an unpredictable surface with no survivability factor has to reach a point of no return. Someone dies there evry year...Can you think of another sporting event in the world where that happens? Smiley

Re: Another dies at the IOM

This type of race is dangerous, and the participants enter of their own free will. Nobody forced them to race. Those who believe the personal risk is too great, don't race.

The rest of us watch those who do race with much awe and respect. It's every street rider's
dream to have the police shut down their favorite piece of road for them to ride on.

Wait till Mad Sunday when they let the squids make some laps after the pubs have opened. In '92 nine died total, 3 racing and 6 on Mad Sunday, IIRC.

Maybe we should have a 3 drink minimum before each spectator lap of the track?!? Then we could be just like the pro's. Instead of air fence we could install guard rails and rock walls....And instead of an injured rider fund we could give out a head stone fund.
Get serious guys! No one should have to die for sport! smiley

Re: Another dies at the IOM

Well, I had a friend die once at Brainerd, Minn. in a crash. I wasn't at that one, thank God. Don't know if I coulda took it. I wasn't so close to him as his dad, but we always pitted together as a group at the AMA stuff that I could make. I felt so bad for A.C. and his wife. They'd already lost a son in a traffic accident. That incident helped make up my mind whether to get out of the sport or not, though money had a lot to do with it, I'll admit. I don't wanna die doing this and I don't want my friends dying doing this sport. Thankfully, IOM is over there and I don't know anyone doing it. It's not much, but a glorified club race anymore, and I don't think the place should be even that. But, Europeans seem to have a different take on things.

Nobody HAD to die for this sport. They CHOSE to participate in a dangerous sport.

Think bull fighting.. Or mountain climbing. How many skiers die every year running into trees? What about skydiving? How about competition aerobatics and airshows?

Re: Another dies at the IOM

There are deaths in every sport. In ever pursuit or activity in life. Yes they choose to participate and I would defend their right to, even agree with the risks of, participating in something you really feel is worthwhile. After all I accept the risks of roadracing a motorcycle.
My only point was with the increase in bike performance when does good sport turn into jousting with death? Is russian roulette a sport? Sooner or later the odds will catch up, do you want to be on the bad side of the law of probablilty when there is no survivability rate? Where is Eugene Templett when you need him? Back me up Delmar!
