Might be Moving to Texas- Lil Help?

Hey All, my name is John Deuser I raced with D2 last year and really enjoyed racing with you guys. I've been offered a position within my company but it would require me moving to Texas. While they'd prefer me in the DFW area Austin is not out of the question.

Let me say I know little to nothing about Texas. I've been to Austin a few times for Music, Dallas and Houston for work. I'm a single guy who doesn't need much and I don't really care about the latest and greatest cars, fashions, ect. Since I'm single and don't really cook, it would be nice to be close to some bars (dive preferred) and restaurants. I travel a fair amount (tx, ok, co, la) usually flying Southwest but it seems American Eagle is on par with their rates. By what research I've done I'm more of an Austin/Old Ft Worth guy but that's not set in stone.

Considering I know little about the area I'm looking for ideas on neighborhoods, and areas to stay away from (keeping in mind I live in an area of KC that's a little rough). I'm hesitant to run down there and sign a year lease. So if someone has an extra room and wants to make some extra money for a few months while I get a lay of the land that might work.

I gotta admit this is not an easy decision for me. I have some great friends in Kansas City and will miss it a lot. However the upside is I get to race with you guys more, which is a big plus.
P.S. I have until Monday to make up my mind. -John Deuser

DFW is more central to the tracks we race on, but Austin would be a better place to live, climate and scenery wise.....if you have to go with DFW and you can locate anywhere in the metroplex, Ft. Worth side would be better for you ( I grew up on the east side of Dallas, Mesquite to be exact...I wouldn't move back, it was great in 1970-80 but not now). If you have to go to the airport alot, check out the north side of Ft. Worth...I'm not extremely familiar with it myself, so I can't be any more exact than this. Bars/ dives I'm more familar with the Dallas side of town, but I'm sure there are some locations like you seek in Ft. Worth or the mid-cities somewhere.

Houston is the best market to probably choose...and of course it always depends on your skillset and career choice. Austin is the town everyone wants to live in...until you have to have a job that pays all the bills so you can take care of your family. A general rule of thumb is that college towns typically have lower wages and higher costs of living (i.e. don't expect a great wage when you have 30,000 kids willing to work for 8.00 an hour).

Dallas is a terrible market right now and it has arguably the worst real estate situation in the state...BUT if you (can) find a decent job, cost of living should be good. Our lenders right now won't touch anything in Dallas due to the economic forecast. The only guys doing lending are "Hard Money" guys and they leverage themselves to the hilt.
