Just a question, but if people bring street legal bikes to track days and are instructed does this still apply? Or did I miss something else in the rules?
"b. courses offering instruction in motorcycle racing techniques on a race track for the purpose of competition using motorcycles designed and constructed for racing and not equipped for operation on public roadways or eligible for registration as a motor vehicle."

A lot of people watch these boards. If those that offer courses have questions about the law, I'm happy to assist offline. For those of you with general questions such as the above, prudence dictates that we direct them to your track day provider of choice - offline.

Misinformation on the part of certain folks, as well as DPS' misunderstanding of what the CMRA and track day instruction offers, is why this particular situation came to a head to begin with.

My bad I completely forgot about prudence. Your right! Who wants the ability to ask questions freely anyway?

Every TD org I've seen requires the removal/obstruction of license plates, mirrors, headlights, and brake lights etc. Which are required for operation on a public roadway.

Exactly. I have never seen a bike at a track day that is street legal. The bike may have stock bodywork but it does not have properly working blinkers, head light, tail light or brake light.

You just never noticed them, Ty! LOL.. When I was instructing, I followed plenty of bikes with working lights. Annoyingly, by the way. Hell, I probably did it as a track noob in my beginning days. Haha..

Anyways, back on topic. Continue on

    Ummm.... Disagree.
At EVERY single RideSmart track day that I attended, the vast majority of bikes in Level 1 and 2 (and even some in Level 3), are all in possession of their turn signals, license plates, headlamps, license plate, etc. Yes, they're taped up, but they are clearly still on the bike; and headlights 'on' are most-often visible through the tape, and even some brake lights (for those that don't have the insight to disconnect the plugs).

At your last RideSmart event in 2010, when the KTM Demo Day occurred, not one of those bikes that I saw, even had the brake lights covered up with tape; which I brought to attention, but nothing was done about it.

At RideSmart and LSTD at least, this is not an issue because all L1 and L2 instructors are now state certified. Our L3 product is clearly intended to teach racing and racetrack specific skills, and therefore qualifies for this exception under those rules.

While the debate about the specific legal subtleties of the language is academically interesting, it's also now irrelevant to at least the two trackday schools mentioned and the CMRA, because they are either clearly covered by the exemption or already in compliance through contract with the state.

Thanks to work on behalf of Brandt, Peyton, and the trackday schools, a comprehensive solution is in place that works for everyone, IMHO.

You're telling me that a cop would let you go with taped up lights because you can still kind of see them on through the tape? Try it and let me know know that works.

Next time you're up for state inspection, leave all your lights functional, but cover them and your mirrors with tape and see if it passes. ;)
