Thread: Lap timer??

  1. #1

    Lap timer??

We need a simple, on bike lap timer that we can see at a quick glance while riding down the straights. All we really need is timing for the last lap, although partial laps would be great so we could see if we were making progress in a certain turn. Suggestions? What do you use?
    Thanks,
    Team 19

AIM Solo GPS. Price is good. Big display and I think you can get a discount through Shandra. And lots of features but you can keep it simple: best lap, predictive lap splits, speed all available. Very good GPS.

AIM Solo here as well. It's been very reliable for me and all the tracks CMRA currently races at are already preloaded.

You are welcome to come by and check it out at Hallett.

    Hahaha
How much are the AIM solo and do any track venders/sponsors sell them?
If you can't race it, it ain't worth having!

I forget the price but I got an AIM solo from Shandra as well. At the time she sold them at the track and I remember the price was a good $50 less that anywhere else. All the CMRA tracks are pre loaded. It also works at TMGP tracks just need to hit a button as start/finish line and complete one lap. It learns the course and will start giving lap times after that.

It has the basic info you want on screen plus it displays all your lap times after a run including min/max speed.

You can also hook it up to your computer with the included software and really get into a lot a data.

I'm a Prov Novice, so please excuse my rookie question, can you not use a smart phone with one of the available apps such as Harry's Lap Timer or TrackAddict?

I have an old iPhone4, that has been susperceeded by my iPhone5 for normal phone use, that I use with Harry's Lap Timer for capturing lap times at track days. I also use it with a Bluetooth GPS receiver to give higher GPS sample rates. The iPhone4 samples GPS once a second, with the GPS receiver, it samples 5 times a second and their are more expensive units that sample at higher rates.

I've considered that. Others have done it. There are some challenges but maybe worthwhile if you can overcome or deal with them. 1. Finding a spare device. 2. Determining how to get it running. 3. Interface complexity, especially while riding or pre-ride, especially with gloves. 4. Reading it

You can do that. You will want to use an external GPS receiver for sure.
