If I were you, I would get the Grom and find a more fun alternate route to work. Twenty miles on the highway wouldn't be much fun. I do short runs on I-35 and other highways around Austin from time to time but I usually just ride through town.

The top speed can depend on how fast traffic is moving around you also. I've been on the highway before with a LOT of traffic moving 65-75mph. The tunnel of air that starts to suck you along is pretty intense and I've been able to sit straight up and down and see 70+ mph in some cases. Before you big guys say that's just due to my size, I had a certain legend with me that weighs 250lbs (and then some) doing the same thing with me. ;)

You'll see 95+ mpg regularly depending on how you ride it. Smaller people who ride really easy see around 130mpg at times. It's worth getting up earlier and taking the fun way.

Oh, they're right about the break in. Mine would only do 62-63mph when I first got it. Now I can see 70+ with a draft/hill.

so, when I get mine back, I guess it's back roads to Austin and back to break it in? what is the best way to break it in (apparently it isn't racing on the track)?

I just had a vision of putting a Grom on a rear stand and running it ala Ferris Bueller's Day Off when they tried to run the Ferrari in reverse to wind back the odo. :D

hmm... I could do that.. but do you need to vary the revs when breaking in?

I don't vary the revs on the track or street... WFO every where... Break it in like you are going to ride it...

I am still breaking mine in, and that includes Grom races. 6 laps of WFO can do nothing but good!

As to the main point of the commuter question, mine is a dream on surface streets, with all the power through the range you would want up to 55mph. I've taken mine in Houston downtown freeway traffic, and while I can hit mid 70s with a draft, the real issue is the lack of quick acceleration at freeway speeds. Unless you are in stop-n-go, you kind of feel like a sitting duck out there because you can't just squirt away from idiots like on a big bike. If you can commute on city streets, the Grom is a no-brainer. You would need to be florescent yellow and a braver man than I to use it for regular Interstate commuting.
