Any word on if this is actually goign to happen? My vote would be for a 12hr as others have stated a 24 hr would be kinda expensive. But I would do my best to participate either way. If this is going to happen it would be good to give teams as much notice to get prepaired as possible.
Will, North Carolina has made you soft. Cowboy up and let's ride! 24 or bust!

Wondering about classes that would be permitted to race. Thinking it might end up being non-standard in many regards, perhaps for safety purposes (i.e. I'm considering dangers of liter bike overtaking SV being compounded with poor visibility even with bike mounted lights). Need to start building teams and potentially bikes.
Don't think this event should count toward normal season points, nor should the teams built affect the normal season's teams. This, along with more riders permitted on a team, might also facilitate reduced individual costs and increase the number of people able to participate.

Surely someone would want to document this real life racing drama on film for release in theatres or reality TV.
Maybe it would bring some sponsors?

What about inviting A.J. Foyt out to start the race?
My thoughts are:
Classes should be allowed as per usual (MCE, F2, SBC, F1). Having F2 bikes out at night with liter bikes worked fine in other races; the most recent I can recall is the MotoST.
Absolutely this event should count toward normal points. With traditional 10 rounds, and only 8 going toward BBE where we have had all 10 in the past, there's no reason why the season for endurance can't be shortened to 6 or 7 BBE rounds, kept the same with 8, or whatever. It's another endurance round IMO, THE endurance round as far as I'm concerned; like the 8 hour, it's a real endurance race by definition.
Regarding number of riders on the team, what we've done before for the 12 hour mini endurance was to allow a one-race exception to the number of riders allowed on a team. I would think allowing 6, rather than the usual 5, would be perfectly acceptable.
I'm not a decision maker, but I REALLY appreciate the comments and enthusiasm with this project. To that end, just because I don't agree with certain ideas or points of view means diddly. So keep 'em coming, I'm just commenting my opinion.
Y'all wouldn't believe the amount of texts, phone calls, emails, and PM's I've received over this proposal. It's a cool thing. I REALLY hope we can pull it off. Heck, when international racers and other road racing professionals want in on an event like this, you know it's a great thing!
Josh, regarding the SV, left in stock configuration with only large tank, suspension and brake modifications, it could be a race winning machine...

I think this race should be held on its own w/ no relation to the standard BBE.
Reasons:
1. that a 24hour race requires a HUGE commitment that ranges from not only building a bike SPECIFICALLY for this event, but the amount of money required to participate.
2. I think it would be unfair to penalize people that are in the hunt for a class championship that cannot afford to spend the money on such an expensive event as this.
3. Lets say for instance the Villiage Idiots get hit by some dumb *** thats way off line and takes them out 4 hours into the race and the bike gets OBLITERATED and they don't have a back up bike with all the lighting required. This would essentially ruin their whole season because of the amount of points that could have been awarded for the rest of the 20 hours in the race.
4. The rules in this event will be different then the standard BBE.
5. There will be more/different riders on each team in this race than the standard BBE.
6. There will be a ton, if not most, of teams that will be competeing in this event and no other endurance event.
I think this event should be held primarly for fun and as a send off for TWS and should have its own standings. We should have a huge trophies for the top three and another trophy for the 1st place in each class and leave it at that. The kings of the 24hour.

I'm going to safety wire up my old Iron Butt Rally competition bike. I can go about 460 without putting a foot down...just run a steady pace on good old ME880's...yep...

With the exception of #4, there is no difference between this and any other BBE. None. Any of the above can and does happen during a 2, 4 or 8 hour race as well. The only reason #4 is an exception is because the only rule difference (I can presume) would be adding a rider above the normal 5, and racing at night. Otherwise, why would the rules be different?
Again, DEVIL'S ADVOCATE here and MY OPINIONNot trying to argue or make any rules; making rules is going to be up to those who really run the show, not people like me who just think they do... ;)
